Multi-cat families

How do I introduce a cat and dog?

Start with scent exchange and physical separation. Keep the dog calmly controlled during brief visual introductions, give the cat high escape routes and a dog-free area, and reward relaxed behaviour. Never allow chasing.

A good next step

  • Exercise the dog before a planned session.
  • Let the cat choose whether to approach.
  • Seek professional help if the dog fixates or the cat remains highly distressed.

Some questions need a vet, not a webpage.

Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe pain, major trauma, suspected poisoning, heatstroke, or repeated straining without passing urine.

If you are unsure, call your regular vet or nearest emergency veterinary clinic for triage.
