Australian Mist

Overview

The Australian Mist is a locally developed shorthaired breed intended as a companion cat, giving the directory an important Australian-specific profile.

Origin and history

Dr Truda Straede began the Australian breeding programme in the late 1970s using Burmese, Abyssinian and domestic cats. The breed was first known as the Spotted Mist.

Appearance and coat

The coat is short with a pale ground colour, ticking and a spotted or marbled pattern. The body is balanced and medium-sized.

Personality and behaviour

The programme emphasised companion behaviour, but every cat still needs individual assessment and respectful handling.

Exercise and enrichment

Moderate daily play, food puzzles and observation opportunities support an indoor routine.

Grooming and shedding

The short coat usually needs light weekly grooming plus routine nail and dental care.

Feeding and weight management

Use a complete and balanced food appropriate for life stage, measure the full daily amount and monitor body condition rather than relying on a breed-based portion. A veterinarian should guide feeding where growth, illness or weight change is involved.

Health considerations

Australian-specific popularity does not remove the need for veterinary records, parent health information and responsible breeding practices.
