Getting started

How long does a cat take to settle into a new home?

There is no fixed timetable. Some cats explore within hours; shy cats may need days or weeks. Look for steady progress—eating, toileting, grooming, playing and choosing to spend time near you—rather than forcing contact.

A good next step

  • Maintain a predictable feeding and play routine.
  • Give hiding places and allow the cat to approach first.
  • Ask a vet for help if your cat is not eating or appears unwell.

Know when to stop searching

Some questions need a vet, not a webpage.

Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe pain, major trauma, suspected poisoning, heatstroke, or repeated straining without passing urine.

If you are unsure, call your regular vet or nearest emergency veterinary clinic for triage.
