Behaviour

Why does my cat bite while being petted?

Some cats become overstimulated or dislike touch in particular areas. Watch for a swishing tail, skin rippling, ears turning back, a tense body or the cat looking at your hand, and stop before those signals escalate.

A good next step

  • Let the cat initiate and end contact.
  • Keep strokes brief and focus around the cheeks and head if welcomed.
  • A new sensitivity to touch warrants a veterinary check for pain.

Know when to stop searching

Some questions need a vet, not a webpage.

Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe pain, major trauma, suspected poisoning, heatstroke, or repeated straining without passing urine.

If you are unsure, call your regular vet or nearest emergency veterinary clinic for triage.
